How To Shop For Nightwear Like A Fashion Writer
Comfort is key – but that needn’t mean sacrificing style.
Changing into a pair of soft pyjamas or a slinky nightdress can be a ritualistic act, signifying a closing of the doors to the outside world, and the beginning of a quiet, intimate, restorative time. It’s why I’m so scrupulous when shopping for sleepwear, approaching the search with the same consideration as I would daytime apparel.
We spend about a third of our lifetime sleeping, so comfort is of course paramount. The right cut and fabrics can make you feel like you’re in a five-star hotel – even if your reality isn’t quite as glamorous. Style is important too, especially given the ongoing trend for sleepwear as daywear. After all, who doesn’t love a double-duty garment?
The Australian designer Peter Alexander is a firm believer in this philosophy. He conceived his eponymous sleepwear brand in 1987, after his female friends bemoaned the lack of comfortable sleepwear that wasn’t matronly. Today, his designs are a firm favourite with many of the fashion set. Spanning classic to whimsical, they come in an array of gorgeous materials, something I think is of vital importance.
The pursuit of good-quality fabrics should guide all shopping decisions, especially when it comes to sleepwear. Cotton is a classic choice – ultra-soft, it lets the skin breathe throughout the night. So too does linen, which is also incredibly durable.
Silk is always the most elegant option, and a great one for balmier nights and for those who naturally run warm, as it wicks moisture away from the body, aiding temperature regulation. It’s also lightweight and hypoallergenic, which supports the skin in its restorative phase.
The choice between nightie or two-set is a personal one – don’t feel the need to swap your beloved pyjama sets for slinky nightdresses (or vice versa) just because you’ve seen them worn well on Instagram. I prefer a pyjama set for comfort and ease of wear – and because it won’t ride up at night. Peter Alexander’s sets span cute to contemporary, short to long, in a range of colours and prints allowing you to align with your personal style. Extend dopamine dressing to the bedroom with a bright red set, or create a feeling of Zen with refined neutrals like this chocolate pair. If going for a nightdress, my tip is to always opt for a size up. Billowier is always better.
This is also good to keep in mind if shopping for presents for loved ones. Pyjamas and gowns are much more forgiving when it comes to sizing, and you’re highly unlikely to insult anybody if you play it safe but buying them a larger size.
With the festive season afoot, it’s also worth perusing Peter Alexander’s edit of candles, silk pillowcases and personalised gifts, which can elevate any bedroom, including your own. A good night’s sleep is the ultimate gift one can receive, and beautiful sleepwear can be the first step towards that.
